This is the online article I read about the hearings.
It's interesting to read that McCarthy, who thought he was acting in the best interest, had so much control and power that he was able to question the loyalty of anyone he wanted. How can one man, in the modern era, obtain so much power by just pointing his finger?
McCarthy took advantage of the Cold War in the 1950s, and used the anti-communist feelings of the U.S. to call into question people who he thought were not loyal. It was also interesting to see that as his accusations grew, his approval rating dropped. If he wanted to stay in power and keep control, why did he continue to allow his rating to drop with more hearings?
Overall, my feeling is that the parallels between McCarthy, and the Crucible are too close, and if a "witch hunt" can happen in the 1950s. Couldn't it happen again?
Witch hunts still happen. Look at how some people feel about Muslims or gays and how they act on that feeling.
ReplyDeleteGood reflection.
